5 Potential Head Coach Candidates for the Dallas Cowboys

Date:

The Cowboys lost in the Wild Card Round and rumors of a possible head coaching change are swirling. Here are five potential head coach candidates for the Dallas Cowboys.

1. Bill Belichick

Belichick is already a legend after his time spent in New England. He won six Super Bowls with the Patriots over 24 seasons. Before being the head coach of the Patriots, he was also the head coach of the Browns. In his head coaching career, he has a 302-165 record. He also spent time with the Jets and Giants as an assistant.

Belichick and Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones reportedly have a decent relationship. The Cowboys could welcome a head coach with a championship pedigree who just had a few rough seasons in New England. Belichick would come to Dallas and continue to pursue Don Shula’s record for most wins all time in the NFL.

2. Jim Harbaugh

Harbaugh just won the National Championship with Michigan. At Michigan, he posted a record of 89-25. He also coached at Stanford with a record of 29-21. In between those stints, Harbaugh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He had a record of 44-19-1 and helped the team make a Super Bowl.

It seems Harbaugh is intent on leaving Michigan for the NFL, as he could have NCAA sanctions coming down. He also has plenty of his players leaving to go to the next level. Harbaugh would bring the Cowboys a level of smashmouth football that they have been missing. The Cowboys ranked near the middle of the NFL at 4.3 yards per carry this season, which would likely be a focal point for improvement for Harbaugh.

3. Mike Vrabel

Vrabel was just dismissed as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. In six seasons, he had a record of 54-45. The move to let Vrabel go shocked many, as he wasn’t always dealt the best cards to work with as the head coach. He also spent time as an assistant at both the NFL and college level.

The Cowboys could value Vrabel’s toughness as a head coach, as he is committed to building a defense and running the football. He is one of the best coaches on the market with proven relative success at the NFL level. Jones may be set on hiring Belichick, but Vrabel learned from him as a player and assistant, so he should get a look as well.

4. Dan Quinn

Quinn is the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. He has built a good defense over the last few years, although there is likely a sour taste after the defense allowed the Packers to score 48 points in the Wild Card Game. He was formerly the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and notably the defensive coordinator for the “Legion of Boom” defenses for the Seattle Seahawks.

The players have shown that they care for Quinn in the past and overall he has done well in Dallas. For Jones to hire him though, he would have to answer how things went awry. He could be out the door for another job or connected too much to Mike McCarthy to end up getting the job.

5. Bobby Slowik

Slowik has been a popular man over the last few weeks. He is the current offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. The Texans just advanced to the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs with a lot of credit going to Slowik for his ability to work with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who had a fantastic season. He has also spent time with the Commanders and the 49ers as an assistant.

His ability to get the most out of an offense has been admirable and the Cowboys could be enticed. They struggled to get their offense going against the Packers until it was too late. While they had a good season offensively, Slowik could bring the team to new heights. If the Cowboys make a coaching change, Slowik will at least get a look.
