2023 Fantasy Football Defense Rankings

The 2023 NFL Draft is over, giving a clearer picture of rosters for the 2023 season. With that fantasy football rankings can be released. Here are the 2023 fantasy football defense rankings. (Note: These are best used for standard-scoring leagues and will be updated until the season starts)

1-5

1. San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco ranked third as a defense last season. They have acquired Javon Hargrave to help stop the run, which should only make them stronger.

2. Dallas Cowboys

Dallas was one of two teams to average 10 points per game last season. Mazi Smith has been added in the middle of the defensive line, while they traded for Stephon Gilmore to help defend the pass.

3. Philadelphia Eagles

Not only were the Eagles able to retain most of their defense from last season, but they added Jalen Carter to the defensive line rotation and Nolan Smith on the edge. Their defense can improve after ranking fifth last season.

4. Buffalo Bills

While the Bills lost Tremaine Edmunds in free agency, they do have Von Miller returning from injury. They ranked fourth last season and can do the same in 2023.

5. New England Patriots

New England ranked first last season and added rookie corner Christian Gonzalez to the fold to help their secondary.

6. New York Jets

After ranking 10th last season, Robert Saleh will have Carl Lawson returning after missing last season. With Sauce Gardner’s emergence, the Jets can improve.

7. Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore’s defense averaged 7.9 points per game and were good, especially after acquiring Roquan Smith to play linebacker.

8. Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati ranked 16th last season and did lose their starting safeties. But they have added plenty of talent in their secondary and their pass rush to possibly see some improvement.

9. New Orleans Saints

In the 2023 NFL Draft, the Saints took Bryan Bresee to improve their defense. They ranked 17th last season and the offenses in their division don’t pose much of a threat.

10. Pittsburgh Steelers

Their 20th-ranking in 2022 was hurt while the offense figured themselves out early in the season. The whole team got in a groove and they finished the year strong.

11. Denver Broncos

The Broncos traded Bradley Chubb and struggled last season after their offense struggled to stay on the field. There is hope that with some talented players on the defensive side of the ball, that they can correct things in 2023.

12. Kansas City Chiefs

While the Chiefs ranked in the top 10 last season, they lost Frank Clark and their pass rush may take a giant step back.

13. Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins have been aggressive in adding to their defense after acquiring Bradley Chubb last season and Jalen Ramsey in the offseason. They should be much improved in 2023.

14. Washington Commanders

In 2022, the Commanders averaged 6.9 points per game. Getting Chase Young back healthy could keep them playing at a similar level in 2023.

15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Without Tom Brady, the Buccaneers figure to run the ball a lot more and take pressure off their defense. They also drafted Calijah Kancey to help the interior of their defensive line.
